The "Melvin" series of demo reissues began with the three part Volume Z, remasters of later Deviant & The Clones demos Goof To The Last Drip, Proverb, and the 1990 compilation (presented at bandcamp with original cover art rather than the Melvin art on the CDs). Volume Y, however is a set of pre-clones demos done with The Modiste Originals, essentially Deviant with help from his Vertical Laughter bandmates (the original Victoria-based line up), doing songs rejected by the other key member of Vertical Laughter for being too "ga-hick" and.or "faggy". Though a couple did eventually get snuck into the repertoire. Other tracks have sections and lyrics that were reworked into new versions that ended up being recorded by later bands. This particular set of demos is a remastered version of the Era album which combined most of the Sigma Plus Or Minus Three (1984) demo cassette with most of the New Beginnings (1985) demo cassette with two additional bonus tracks from the same period.
